THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington is directed by a Board of Trustees elected by members at the annual meeting in June of each year. It comprises twelve members: the President, Vice President, Council Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Property Committee Chair, Personnel Committee Chair and three Trustees-at-Large. Each Trustee has one vote. Trustees-at-Large are elected at the annual meeting for a two-year term or until their successors are elected and qualified. The Board exercises all the powers of the Society except those conferred upon the voting members or prohibited to it by law, the articles of Association or Society Bylaws, and is responsible for Society properties and the employment and service of Society employees. It meets monthly, and occasional special meetings are held at the call of the President or Executive Vice President. All Society members have the right to attend Board meetings and to address the Board. The Board also has an Executive Committee, comprised of the President, Vice President, Council Chair, Treasurer, Property Committee Chair and one other Trustee elected by the full Board.

THE COUNCIL

The Council was created in 1989 for the purpose of dividing into more manageable sectors the work done by the Society. The Board of Trustees and the Council now work in concert on separate but related activities. The committees connected to the Council and the Board are described in the pages following. The Council meets quarterly to review the current work of each Council committee and to use creative efforts to solve new problems and to meet new needs. Council meetings are attended by the Chair or a representative from each Council committee. To ensure good communication between Board and Council, the Chair of the Council attends and participates in meetings of the Board. All Council meetings are open; members of the congregation are welcome to attend.

COMMITTEES

Click here for information on the standing committees that hold regular meetings, generally once a month. As well as the committees described, there are additional groups that meet as required to carry out specific business. The standing committees are: Anti-Racism Action; Canvass; Child Care; Committee on the Ministry; Denominational Affairs; Finance; Goals and Evaluation; Lay Ministry; Membership; Music; Nominating; Personnel; Programs and Adult Religious Education; Property; Public Relations and Publicity; Religious Education; Social Action; Trust Fund; and Worship. Contact the minister or any Board member for more information about the committees. Serving on a committee not only helps in the operation of this Society, but provides opportunity to get to know other members with similar concerns and interests and to do something about them. Please contact the appropriate committee chairs if you are interested in joining a committee. Many committees have room for new members and welcome them
