The Love That Makes the World Go \'Round: by Reverend Roberta Finkelstein
February 12th, 2012
What kind of love makes the world go ‘round? Last week we heard from many different members of this congregation about the kind of love that creates and sustains partnerships and families. Romantic love, yes. Creative love. Long haul love. This week I want to talk with you about the kind of love that creates and sustains communities. This community.

Death with Dignity: by Reverend Roberta Finkelstein
January 22nd, 2012
I graduated from nursing school in 1977 and went to work on the medical floor of a small, physician-owned hospital in Washington, DC. In my first year there were two patients who had a great impact on me. The first was John, a man in his mid-twenties with a diagnosis of ‘fever of unknown origin’. John had lots of friends – all men – who were fiercely protective of him and clearly loved him dearly. His physician ordered antibiotic after antibiotic, consult after consult. But John’s fever just got worse and worse.

January 15th, 2012
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday we celebrate today and whose legacy we honor, spoke often of ‘beloved community’. I’d like us to think about what that phrase means for us. Theologian James Luther Adams wrote that “religious liberalism affirms the moral obligation to direct one’s effort toward the establishment of a just and loving community.” A beloved community would have to be a just and loving community. I am using Adams’ essay on The Five Smooth Stones of Liberalism as the basis for a five sermon series
